Cameras are magical things, in that they allow you to capture a moment in time that can be relived!

Technology is advancing at an exponential rate, and with these advancements come new opportunities and experiences.

My Life in Cameras:

2025 - Insta360 Ace2 Pro

My New Toy

The Insta360 Ace2 Pro is an action camera that has jointly been designed with Leica. The most appealing function for me is the possibility to use Leica profiles for generating 50 megapixel images. It will accompany my Insta360 X4 on future trips to capture more action styles content.

2025 - DJI MINI 4 PRO

MY NEW DIGITAL BIRD

With it being under the magical 249 grams should help with more flying hours.

2024 - Apple Vision Pro

Brings 360 photo's and video's to life

Wow, what an experience! viewing digital content on a computer that sits on your face is quite impressive, plus it has a camera built into the headset.

2024 - Insta360 X4

Amazing 8K 360 Action Camera

This is my first purchase of a 360 camera, and using it is quite interesting.

China has a lot of restrictions on the use of drones in places I like to visit, particularly the Great Wall of China. But with this camera, I can simulate drone footage by mounting the Insta360 onto a 3 meter ex[pansion stick that gives me a semi aerial view.

I have been waiting for this segemtn to mature before jumping in, and this seems like the right time to take that leap.

2024 - Sony RX10 MK IV

Semi-Pro Bridge Camera - 24mm-600mm (1200mm with Clear Zoom)

I purchased this camera in March 2024, and although this camera launched in 2016, it has become my goto camera for travel, sport, and wildlife photography and videography when I want to travel light.

I am super impressed with the versility of this camera, simply put, it's awesome!

This camera is weather sealed, which adds to it's versatility.

2023 - DJI OSMO Pocket 3

Camera on a Gimbal

This is a great camera for vlogging, it captures great footage, and is not too bad in low light. It has a 1 inch sensor, that also captures great timelapses, and motion lapses, and the footage is quite stable when walking and talking.

This camera is not weather-sealed, so care is needed for it's use in certain weather conditions.

I have DJI Mic 2 microphones with the Pocket 3 that are great for interviews or doing a multi-person blog.

2023 - iPhone 15 Pro Max

Mobile Phone

My photographic mindset and philosophy is changing, where I am starting to prefer more and more to travel a little lighter rather than lugging around DSLR's and a huge array of lenses.

I have recently used the iPhone 15 Pro Max exclusivly on two vacation trips, and have been quite impressed with the results. The images shot at 48 megapixels print produce great quality prints that are oin sharp.

Images from my iPhone photos are used as the basis for my digital art creations that look great when printed, framed, and hung on a wall.

In addition, I also own the full range of Freewell Sherpa 2 lenses, case, remote grip, and I built a video rig around the Smallrig cage system for video capture.

2023 - Sony FDR-AXP55 4K Handycam

Good Old Reliable Camcorder

I use this Handycam to record YouTube videos for my YouTube Channel, mainly used for cooking videos. It runs forever, does not overheat, and produces great results that can also be displayed via the built-in projector on a wall.

I bought this camera in Asia, so it was based on the PAL formats, but I managed to convert it to the NTSC standard via a firmware hack.

The only this that is missing for me is the lack of full manual control, but for the proce and quality you can't win them all!

2022 - DJI Action 3

Action Camera

Robust, rugged, well built, and produces great results for those on the go.

I use this camera for various adventures when hiking, skiing, and for underwater shots. Sometimes I use this camera on my bicycle and electric scooter to produce motion lapses. I love the mounting system that is also compatible with the DJI Action 2.

2022 - DJI Action 2

Action Camera

Although not waterproof, I have an underwater housing for this camera that I use for event walkabouts, in the kitchen, and on my bicycle, electric scooter and in the car to produce various clips. I like the small form factor of this camera and the different ways of mounting it to various things.

2022 - Olympus TG-6

Compact Camera

This camera is great for hiking, beaches, skiing, water sports, heavy rain storms and is super rugged, or should I say tough:).

It shoots RAW at 12 megapixels and produces quite good results in good lighting conditions. The batteries are also compatible with my Olympus Tracker action camera.

2022 - OM-Systems OM1

M4/3 DSLR

Having used the original Olympus OM1 for several years, I had to buy this camera, the last camera to bear the Olympus badge and is an awesome pro level camera.

I moved away from the full-frame Canon DSLR world several years ago, and I love the M4/3 form factor and how lighweight the equipment is.

The camera has insane 5 axis image stabilization, and I dont thing I have ever used a tripod with the camera.

It's great and fun to use, and produces outatanding photos, and the video is not too bad either. I have also built a rig for this camera based on Smallrig.

As for lenses, I own the following:

  • Olympus Zuiko 7mm-14mm f2.8 Pro
  • Olympus Zuiko 12mm-40mm f2.8 Pro
  • Olympus Zuiko 12mm-100mm f4 Pro
  • Olympus Zuiko 40mm-150mm f2,8 Pro
  • OM Systems Zuiko 150mm-600mm f5.0-f6.3 super zoom (new purchase)
  • Olympus Zuiko 25mm f1.2 Pro
  • Olympus Zuiko 17mm f1.8
  • Olympus Zuiko 17mm f2.8
  • Olympus Zuiko 12mm-200mm f3.5-f6.3
  • Olympus Zuiko 60mm f2.8 Macro
  • Olympus Zuiko 75mm-300mm f4.8-f6.7
  • Olympus Zuiko MC1.4 X 1.4 Tele Converter
  • Olympus Zuiko MC2 X 2 Tele Converter
  • Various kit lenses that I have collected over the years
  • Olympus FL-50R External Flash
  • Third Party Macro Ring Flash
  • Numerous Filters and External Microphones

All lenses and accessories are shared between the Olympus OMD-E1 and the Olympus Pen-F.

2019 - DJI Action 1

Action Camera

My DJI Action 1 has been officially retired due to subsequent upgrades to the Action 2 and 3. Although I still own the camera I will donate it to a good cause.

2018 - DJI Mavick Spark

Drone

Hooked by my brief usage of the Mavick 1, I decided to invest in a smaller leass conspicuous version, the DJI Mavick Spark. I only used this drone briefly to test and get use to flying, then I was in lockdown for 3 years in China due to COVID-19.

Last year (2023) I went on a camping trip into the mountains just outside of Beijing, where I flew it for some time. Unfortunately, the batteries were not optimal so my flight time was limited. I still own the drone and I am looking forward to using it more now that I have moved outside of Beijing.

2019 - DJI Pocket 1

Camera on a Gimbal

A similar story to the Action 1, and the same fate awaits this camera where it will be donated to a good cause or someone in need.

2019 - Sony RX100 MK VII

Compact Camera

This camera is a gem, and it is packed with leading edge technology, it is small and compact, and takes awesome images and 4K video. This camera accompanies me on all my trips, and is great for events, street photography and for those situations where you may need to be discreet. The image and video results are outstanding.

It is the little brother or sister to the RX100, and they both share a one inch sensor.

I have also pimped the camera with it's own video rig, based on Smallrig and Ulanzi.

It also shares some of the accessories I have for the RX10 such as microphones and video lighting.

2017 - Olympus OM-D E-1 MKII

M4/3 DSLR

Still used today and shares all of the lenses and accessories of the OM-1.

Has 5 axis image stabilization, and like the OM-1, I don't remeber ever using a tripod with this camera.

Produces great photo's, but the video is not as good as the OM-1, but still very good.

2017 - DJI Mavick Drone

Drone

My first step into the realms of drone photography.

Although I did not use this drone very often, as I live in Beijing and they are forbidden, I decided to leave it for the family to use in the US.

2016 - Olympus PEN F

M4/3 DSLR

This is one of my favorite cameras, it's great retro look, internal technology for different picture and color profiles are amazing.

When I use this camers in the field, it draws a lot of looks. The only downside is it only shoots HD video, no 4K. I was hoping for a firmware update to upgrade the video resolution, but alas I will have to do with HD, which is also good quality.

2015 - Olympus Tracker

Action Camera

I purchased this camera for a vacation trip to Myrtle Beach in 2015 together with my sister and brother-in-law. The camera has a detachable pistol grip, and whilst going through security at the airport I was stopped and searched, as the security guards thought I was carrying a gun.

I still own the camera, but it has been retired, but I rycycled the batteries for my current Olympus TG-6.

2014 - Blackmagic 2.7K Video Camera

Cinematic Camera

I still own this camera, alomg with of the Canon and Rokinon EF lenses this is currently in storage in the United States. It's difficult to bring such equipment to China where I am currently based.

I used thi camera for several music video shoots together with the yeam at Groovebox Studios in Detroit.

2014 - Panasonic GH4

M4/3 DSLR

I no longer own this camera, but I remember the video quality being state-of-the-art when it launched back in the day. However, the stills were not so good, particularly in low light.

2014 - Canon EOS 6D MK I

Full Frame DSLR

I still own this camera which is currently in storage in the United States along with many L Series Pro lenses that were shared with the EOS 5D MKIII. The camera produced pleasing results, but not quite as good as the flagship 5D MKIII at the time.

I look forward to brushing off the cobwebs of this camera some day when I get back to the US.

2013 - GoPro MK 1

Action Camera

The first GoPro action camera, actually I owned two of these cameras that were purchased for different types of events for the MI SportsEdge magazine.

It was fun to use at the dawn of the action camera world and craze.

2013 - Olympus PEN E-PL5

M4/3 DSLR

I no longer own this camera, and was purchased as a compact point-and-shoot camera for travel, rather than lugging around all of my Canon gear.

2012 - Canon EOS 5D MKIII

Full Frame DSLR

I still own this camera, which is currently in storage in the United States. This camera was awesome to use, produced great pictures and video.

I look forward to the day when I am reunited with this camera, but, as I mentioned earlier, my photographic needs have changed where I prefer smaller footprint cameras. But this camera was a classic, and I sold several photo's from this camera.

2011 - Canon EOS 7D MK I

APS-C DSLR

I bought this camera and various lenses out of frustration with Olympus, because of their lagging video capabilites, they were abit slow on the adoption of videos in the DSLR's due to some principles, but when they caught up I switched back due to the form factor and my fondness of using Olympus.

I still own the camera, that is currently in storage in the United States, and will probably donate to a good cause when I return.

2010 - Panasonic HMV150 Video Camera

Digital Video Camera

I still own this camera, amd liike my Canon equipment  is in storage in the United States. This is a HD digtial video camera with an impressive specification and advanced built-in technologies that produce great results.

I used this camera for several events for Mercedes-Benz in the US and to shoot several music videos together with the Groovebox Studio team in Detroit.

This camera is still for sale today that just goes to show what an great piece of equipment this camera was/is.

2009 - Olympus PEN

plus M4/3 lenses and external flash

I received this camera for my 50th birthday, which was also the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original Pen in 1959.

Due to the exponential advancements in technology, this camera quickly became outdated. Unfortuatley as part of my divorce, this camera was lost.

2008 - Olympus 570UZ

Digital Bridge Camera

This camera was quite slow to focus and zoom, and I don't remember this camera producing anything of worth. Image quality was OK at the time, but I found it frustrating to use.

2007 - Olympus E3

M4/3 DSLR

I took many memorable photographs with this camera, unfortunatley no video that I remember, which was one of my frustrations with Olympus at the time.

Produced pleasing images with nice skin tones, and was great for travelling.

2005 - JVC Video Camera

Hybrid Digital Camera

I bought this camera whist on a business trip to Singapore, the attraction being it was compact, had 3CCD's and could shoot both video and take stills.

The quality of the video and images were not the best, but it did its job as an all-in-one travel camera.

2005 - Olympus E500

M4/3 DSLR

This camera was an upgrade to both the E400 and the E300. But all the lenses could be re-used.

The camera produced some nice images, some I still have hanging on my wall at home.

2004 - Olympus E400

M4/3 DSLR

This camera was an upgrade to the E300 and had higher megapixels that the E300.

I gave this camera away to an old colleague who got a lot more use out of it that myself.

2004 - Olympus E300

M4/3 DSLR

This camera was based on the original E-300 35mm film camera body. However, the camera only had 8 megapixels, and although some of the images were OK, I needed higher resolution for the type of prints I wanted to make.

Retro and stylish, and was lost during my divorce process.

2003 - Nikon P30

Compact Point and Shoot

Nothing really special about this camera, I purchased it during my time living in Berlin and Stuttgart.

It served it's purpose as a travel compact point-and-shoot camera.

2003 - Olympus C5050

Compact Bridge

I owned two of these cameras, and they produced pleasing images from family vacations. Full manual control was possible with some low-res video capabilites, but I remember one of the cameras experiencing problems whilst on holiday in Florida, where it failed due to the humidity and heat changes due to the weather and heavy use of air conditioning.

It was a nice little camera to use.

2002 - Fujifilm S2 Pro

DSLR

This camera at it's release was the talk of the town, with it's hexagonal and stacking of 3 layers of pixels and choice of controls, promised to be something special.

It used Nikon F-Mount lenses, but the autofocus was slow and always reliable. I has more success using manual focus, but is produced some OK images.

I gave this camera away to friends when I moved to the United States in 2006. I did not want to build up two camera systems in parallel, and decided at that time for Olympus.

2001 - Olympus E-20

Bridge DSLR

Nice camera to use and produced some pleasing photographs. An upgrade from the E-10, but I could reuse all of the accessories from the E-10.

I took a number of images that were used in advertising "The Pack Horse Inn" at Allerford, Somerset, UK and for their website that I also developed.

2000 - Olympus E-10

Bridge DSLR

I took many images of Riome during my time living there. The camera was leading edge, produced pleasing images, but the reolution was a little on the low side. But I have some pictures taken from the camera hanging on my wall.

It was not that great in low light, and sometimes stuggled locking auto focus. But it was a nice camera to use and was one of the reason why I upgraded to the E-20.

1999 - Olympus C3030

plus accessories

1998 - Olympus Camedia C1400 XL

Digital Camera

I bought this camera as my previous C1400 was stolen at the Paris autoshow, which was used by Mercedes-Benz head in France to photograph the event.

This was an upgrade the C1400 with some added functionality and upgrades to existing functions.

1997 - Olympus Camedia C1400

Digital Camera

It took many photos with this camera mainly on ski trips when I was living and working in Munich, Germany.

But, it was stolen at the Paris Auto Show and was replaced by the C1400 XL.

Easy to use, but sometimes the exposure was off, particularly when skiing with the strong backlight. There were no manual setting on the camera, only some different scene modes.

1997 - Minolta X800i

35mm SLR

This camera was my last owned 35mm film camera. It had lots of new technologies at the time for autofocus and expose metering, but was a bit slow in focusing.

I mainly shot slide film using this camera, as printing the picture using 35mm roll film was a pain and expensive. I also developed and mounted the slide transparacies.

1995 - Casio QV10

Digital Camera

The worlds first consumer digital camera. Was very expensive, low resolution, but was the foundation of what was to come in the future.

This camera was also lost during my divorce, (I kept most of my old cameras) but it was the start of my digtial journey,

1992 - Sony Handycam 8mm Video Camera

Hi8 Video Camera

I shot many, many hours of video with this camera, particlarly of the kids growing up. I still owned this camera until a few years ago when it was lost as part of my divorce process. Fortuatley, I had digitased all of the tapes that took many hours, so at least I was able to keep the memories shot with this camera.

I also had an underwater housing for this camera that I used for for a number of diving trips in the Mediterranean Sea.

1990 - Pentax P30T

35mm SLR

This is probably the camera that I used the most during the 1990's. I had a suitcase full of negative, slide and contact prints that I developed in my homemade dark room in my attic.

Produced great results for the price point, but you needed good glass. I traded this camera in for the Minolta X800i.

1990 - Canon 8mm Video Camera

8mm Video Camera

I used this camera for a few years videoing the birth of two of my kids, but in 1993 the heads became clogged and were worn out. It was actually cheaper to buy a new camera than it was to get this one repaired, so I moved over to Sony.

1988 - Olympus OM1

35mm SLR

I owned two of this iconic cameras, and I really enjoyed shooting with them. This is why my current digital OM-1 is so special, I love the old retro styles, that are great looking cameras and easy to handle that produced great results.

I shot slide, black & white and negative films with these camera. I have lots of fond memories shooting with this camera.

1978 - Zenit-E

35mm SLR

This was a very solidly built camera from Russia. An entry level SLR, with no autofocus, a basic metering system, and was cheap. It used Helios lenses that were also reasonably priced, and I used it for many years.

I had to make sure I used this camera when I was not drinking, due to eyesight issues being it be a manual focus camera:)

1971 - Kodak Instamatic

110 Film Cartridge

This was my first camera that used a 110 film cartridge. It was a point and shoot with basic functionality, and I remember taking many pictures of rubbish things, but hey, thats how you learn!

I bought this camera by saving up my pocket money, which took some time as I did not get a lot:) I was trying to save up for the Olympus Trip35, but I had to settle for this camera instead.
